Bee Hive Cake -- For Our Anniversary

This weekend was our anniversary, and as we've been married so long, Dave has become conditioned to expect baked treats on holidays and celebrations. I usually make a cheesecake, or a big layer cake, but this time I went with something more symbolic--a bee hive cake since Dave is my Honey. Get it?

I first saw this cake in Martha Stewart Magazine a few months ago, and as soon as I spotted it I knew I wanted to make it. I don't usually go in for fancy shaped pans, but this was just too adorable to resist. If you'd like to order the pan, you can find it at amazon.

The little sugar bee decorations are also from amazon.

Can you tell I love amazon? I think my Wish-List is now in triple digits.

The cake is honey-lemon flavored and it's simple to make. The frosting to hold the two sides of the cake together is a quick buttercream, and the icing is just powdered sugar and milk. The pan worked remarkably well (it's fairly heavy), and the cake didn't stick at all.

The exact recipe I used was from The Daily Green, one of my favorite places to find neat cooking ideas. http://www.thedailygreen.com/healthy-eating/recipes/2686 The cake was really good--moist and with a fine crumb. I really like the honey-lemon flavor.

Of course, you can use this pan for other cake batters. And you can decorate it much more elaborately with frosting or fondant. I thought it was delicious with minimal frosting.

One of the things we did over the anniversary weekend was to go to the pumpkin patch. I love seeing all the unusual varieties of pumpkins. I even found a white baking pumpkin. Neat! I have to decide if I want to make a sweet or savory pumpkin dish.

Ours is next month - 15 years! I guess I'd better start thinking of something special to make.

And I can't wait to see what you do with the white pumpkin.
