Tuesdays with Dorie -- Honey Peach Ice Cream with Poppy Seeds and Cookie Spoons

For TWD this week: Honey-Peach Ice Cream chosen by Tommi of Brown Interior. I love peaches and Dave LOVES ice cream, so this was a good recipe for us.

I've been thinking lately that I want to make some peach-poppy seed muffins. I really like lemon poppy seed muffins, and I imagine that a peach version would also be delicious. So, whenI saw that we were using peaches this week, I knew right away that I would add poppy seeds to the ice cream.

I made some really adorable cookie "spoons" to go along with the ice cream. The spoons are another Martha Stewart genius recipe. You can find the pattern for the spoons and get the recipe here: http://www.marthastewart.com/recipe/vanilla-raspberry-sundaes-with-spoon-shaped-cookies It's a modified shortbread recipe, and there is enough dough to make many spoons. I ended up freezing about 2/3 of the dough to use later.

The cookie spoons are easy to make, but the dough is a bit tricky to work with--it's rather crumbly and dry; I think that's because the cookies need to be harder than your average shortbread to be able to scoop up ice cream. Note: to use these cookies as spoons you must have softened ice cream; they are most definitely not strong enough to spoon up hard-as-a-rock-frozen-solid-ice cream.

The ice cream was really tasty with a subtle peach flavor. I think I'll add even more peach flavor the next time I make it since I really like the taste of peaches. I'll probably double the amount of peach puree, and add some additional peach preserves. The poppy seeds turned out to be a wonderful addition--they're pretty, and they added a surprising crunch in the creamy ice cream. If you're interested in making poppy seed ice cream there's a neat recipe here: http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/6091/poppy+seed+ice+cream+with+orange+sauce
