As I mentioned in an earlier post, I am cooking more whole grains in an effort to eat more nutritiously. Here are some "sneaky" ways to make tasty meals for your family that feature whole grains.

When whole grain pasta first starting showing up in grocery stores, I was pretty excited. That was until I tasted it. Most of the brands of whole grain pastas I tried ended up gummy and mushy when cooked. A few days ago, I saw the "Graziana" brand of pasta in the store-it's an Italian import. As Rachael Ray would say- "Yummo!". This pasta is delicious. It stays firm and cooks up perfectly al dente. I made the linguine with some basic marinara sauce, and both Dave and I loved it. I'll be buying more of this pasta next time I shop.

I made a very simple edamame "hummus" for a snack this weekend. I mixed up defrosted edamame, a little olive oil, salt, pepper, hot sauce, and a small amount of sweet potato vinegar in the food processor. It made a lovely dip and I served it with some whole grain brown rice crackers.

Here's the neat Japanese purple sweet potato vinegar I used. It has a really wonderful flavor and is actually quite mild.

A super simple whole grain substitution-brown rice cereal. I love this stuff!
It's basically the whole grain version of Rice Krispies. I eat this cereal for dinner with almond milk any time I'm not cooking. I found this brand at the local Wal-mart and it's $1 a bag-such a great deal.

Now you are on to my kind of food. We eat wheat pasta and low calorie pasta sauce. I want to try hummus for snacks since they talk about it on my fitnesspal site. I am going to have to try that cereal from Walmart. Thanks for all the good ideas.
ReplyDeleteI really do love the way you introduce your readers to new ingredients: Japanense purple sweet potato vinegar, who'd have thought it.
ReplyDeleteI have never tried edamame beans, but will if I should ever see them fresh or frozen, esp as hummus which I really love to eat with pitta bread. Thanks!

I think everything posted made a great deal of sense. However, think on this, suppose you composed a catchier title?
ReplyDeleteI am not suggesting your content isn't solid., however what if you added a title to possibly grab folk's attention?
I mean "Sneaky Whole Grains" is a little vanilla. You ought to glance at Yahoo's front page and watch how they create article headlines to grab people to open the links. You might add a related video or a picture or two to grab readers interested about everything've written.
In my opinion, it could make your blog a little bit more
interesting.
