Poppy Seed Croutons

I don't like to waste food, and one way I use up extra bits of bread is by making my own croutons. Homemade croutons are much better than packaged ones, and they are so simple to make. I bake a big batch whenever I've accumulated enough leftover bread, and then I freeze them.

When I do have extra bread, even just a couple pieces, I freeze it to be used later as croutons, bread crumbs, or stuffing. To make the croutons: Dice up all your leftover bread into about 1/2-inch pieces. Put the bread cubes on a big baking sheet. Drizzle with a little olive oil, and season with salt, and any other seasonings you like. For these croutons, I used salt, pepper, and poppy seeds. Bake in a 350F oven, stirring several times, for about 20 minutes, or until the bread is toasty and lightly browned. Serve in salads, with soup, or even just for snacking.

  1. My MIL makes homemade croutons and DH loves them and I've had them and enjoyed them as well. I think I've made my own a few times, but it's been a long, long time. I think I may have to try this again. Thanks for the reminder of how easy and yummy they are!
