Spicy applesauce muffins

I had some leftover homemade applesauce (August 27th post) that was taking up room in the fridge so I made these muffins for Dave's breakfast and for snacks at work. The original recipe is from Gourmet magazine but I did not follow it very closely.

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup plus 3 tablespoons melted butter
1 cup unsweetened applesauce (I used my homemade chunky applesauce)
1 cup pecans or walnuts, coarsely chopped

cinnamon -sugar mixture for topping (I did not use any topping)

Mix together all the dry ingredients, the eggs, the sugar, the butter, and the applesauce, until smooth. Stir in the nuts. Pour batter into greased muffin tins or muffin tins lined with cupcake cups. Sprinkle the top of each muffin with the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Bake in a preheated 400F oven for about 20 minites, until the muffin centers are cooked through.

These are really yummy and extra moist!
